Ingredients for Water Bread Recipe 1

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ¼ yeast cake dissolved in ¼ cup lukewarm water
  • About six cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Mix vegetable shortening, sugar, and salt and pour on boiling water. When lukewarm, add dissolved yeast cake.
  2. Stir in enough flour to make a batter.
  3. Beat well, then add more flour a little at a time to make stiff dough, mixing with a knife.
  4. Pour on a floured board and knead until it is smooth, elastic, and does not stick to the board.
  5. Put into an oiled bowl, cover closely, and let stand in a warm place over night.
  6. The first thing in the morning, knead again until fine grained. Shape into loaves and place in a warm pan greased with vegetable shortening.
  7. Cover and put in a warm place.
  8. When double in bulk, bake at 400 degrees for one hour.
