Ingredients for Salisbury Steak Recipe

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can condensed French onion soup
  • 1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1-1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • prepared mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles

Instructions

  1. Add bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and 1/3 cup soup to the beaten egg; stir.
  2. Add beef to mixture and use hands to mix lightly.
  3. Shape with hands to make patties-- either 4 large or 6 medium-sized. For more authentic Salisbury Steak, make oval-shaped patties.
  4. Brown patties over medium heat, turning once; remove from pan.
  5. After removing grease and drippings from pan, add flour and water to the pan. Stir well.
  6. Stir in ketchup, Worschestershire sauce, mustard, and leftover soup. Heat over medium heat, stirring well, until mixture begins to boil.
  7. Allow to boil another 2 minutes and continue to boil.
  8. Add browned patties to the pan.
  9. Bring back to the boil; cover and lower heat. Simmer for approximately 20 minutes.
  10. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
