Easter eggs are a colorful springtime treat

Pastels Are In

Pastel colored eggs and egg shaped cookies are traditional treats for Easter. Using some of these Easter recipe tips, you can make your own cookie coloring. These colored sugars are good for any sugar cookie recipe that you happen to have.

You will need some food coloring, plastic bags, and 3 tablespoons of sugar for each color you want to make.

First, put the sugar into the plastic bag. Add a few drops of coloring and mush the sugar around. If the color is too dark, add more sugar until the color becomes lighter.

Spread the sugar out on a small piece of foil and place the foil in your oven without turning it. The pilot light will keep the oven at about 100 degrees, which will dry the sugar with out melting it. Keep the sugar in the oven for 30 minutes, then take it out and crumble up any clumps. You can use this sugar on cookies before you bake them or use it as a decorative sugar on any baked goods, like cupcakes.

Color Your Eggs

Since you have the food coloring out, here is an Easter recipe tip that will help you color some eggs. Get together some cups large enough to hold at least 1 cup water and an egg. Into the cup, pour 2/3 cup water and 2 teaspoons white vinegar. Then, add about a 1/4 teaspoon food coloring. Mixing the basic colors of red, blue, green, and yellow will create new colors. Dip your hard-boiled eggs into the colored water.

Now Use Those Eggs

In Greece, they make traditional Easter bread that is braided, but you can also make it in small round loaves. You will need red colored eggs for this Easter recipe tip, as well as:

  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 beaten egg yolk
  • Sesame seeds
  • 6 red hard-boiled eggs

Directions:

  1. Bloom the yeast in warm water.
  2. Mix the cinnamon and boiling water.
  3. Combine sugar and eggs and beat well. Add the melted butter to the egg mixture and beat again.
  4. Skim off 1/4 cup clear cinnamon water and add, along with yeast and milk, to egg mixture and mix it thoroughly.
  5. Mix the dry ingredients and add them to the batter, then knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. If you have a stand mixer with a dough hook it will help with this part.
  6. Shape dough to fit into 2 greased 8-inch round pans. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. Push the red dyed eggs into the bread.
  7. Brush the loaves with beaten egg yolk and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Easter Lamb Roast

For this Easter recipe tip you will need:

  • 1 5-lb. leg of lamb
  • 3 cloves of garlic, cut thin
  • 1/2 cup of lemon juice
  • A couple of sprigs of fresh rosemary
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons crushed white pepper
  • Kosher salt

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 400 degree fahrenheit and bring the lamb to room temperature.
  2. Make several small cuts on the lamb big enough to fit a piece of garlic and a few rosemary leaves.
  3. Rub the lamb with lemon juice, coat with the crushed pepper, and sprinkle with salt.
  4. Place the lamb in a roasting pan, fat side up. Cook until the internal temperature is at least 175–180 degrees fahrenheit, which should be about 30 minutes for each pound of lamb.
