Graham bread recipes were the brainchild of Sylvester Graham, a Presbyterian minister in Pennsylvania who was known for his strict adherence to vegetarianism and healthy living. Graham wanted a bread that was healthy and provided more nutrients than what was typically offered in the 1820s. He developed graham bread to be high in fiber, using unbleached flour and no artificial additives. Graham believed this bread would make people healthier. As we now know, diets high in fiber do have definite health benefits. His invention eventually led to the development of graham crackers, although it’s not historically clear whether he created it or if someone else made it based on Graham’s bread.
The Real Reason for Graham Bread
Although the Reverend Graham was definitely interested in the public’s health when he encouraged people to try his bread, he had other hopes for the bread’s success. Graham was deeply bothered by the number of extramarital affairs and out-of-wedlock pregnancies in his society and he believed that a diet full of impurities like bleached flour led to impurities of the body. His graham bread recipes were just one step in getting people to eat better and avoid sexual temptations. It also made some people uninterested in the product. Although his preaching about natural foods won him some followers, he was also targeted by butchers and bakers who believed he was taking business away from them.
