Ingredients for Apple Fritters

  • 1½ cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon melted vegetable shortening
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 3 apples cut in quarter inch slices
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 lemon

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and slice apples, then sprinkle 2 tablespoons sugar and strained juice of the lemon over them.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt into bowl, add milk to well beaten egg and stir liquid gradually into dry materials, beating thoroughly, then add vegetable shortening.
  3. Cover apple slices with batter and drop them into plenty of vegetable shortening heated so that small breadcrumb browns in sixty seconds.
  4. Fry for four or five minutes.
  5. Drain and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
  6. Any other fruit may be substituted for apples or a combination of fruits makes a delicious fritter.
  7. Sufficient for twelve fritters.
