Ingredients for American Soup Recipe
- 1 pound of mutton
- 1/2 pound of split peas, soaked in cold water overnight
- 5 pints of water
- 1 chopped onion
- 1/2 turnip
- 1/2 carrot
- 1 stalk of celery, chopped
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3-4 tomatoes
- Salt and pepper
- Nutmeg or mace to taste
Instructions
- Cut mutton into small pieces. Put mutton pieces into a saucepan with split peas.
- Add water, bring to a boil, and add chopped onion, turnip, carrot, celery, and sugar.
- Simmer two or three hours.
- Cut the tomatoes into small pieces, add them to the soup, and boil thirty minutes longer.
- Strain through a fine sieve, season with salt, pepper, and a very little nutmeg or mace.
- Boil up and serve with croutons or triangles of crisp toast.
