Ingredients for Yorkshire Fruit Loaves Recipe

  • 2 lbs. flour
  • ¾ cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup sultana raisins
  • 1 cup currants
  • ½ cup seeded raisins
  • ½ cup chopped candied citron peel
  • 1 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • ½ teaspoon powdered mace

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable shortening in milk, then cool and add yeast cake mixed with a little sugar.
  2. Stir in flour and salt and allow to rise four hours.
  3. Mix sugar, fruit, peel, and spices into risen dough.
  4. Let rise again, then divide into two greased loaf tins.
  5. Allow to rise fifteen minutes, then bake at 400 degrees for 90 minutes.
  6. Sufficient for two medium-sized loaves.
