Ingredients for Raisin Bread Recipe 1
- 1 cake yeast
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 1 cup milk, scalded and cooled
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 6 cups sifted flour
- 4 tablespoons vegetable shortening or butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions
- Dissolve yeast and one tablespoon sugar in lukewarm liquid.
- Add two cups of flour, the shortening or butter, and well-creamed sugar. Beat until smooth.
- Cover and set aside to rise in a warm, draft-free place until light, about 60-90 minutes.
- When risen, add well-floured raisins, the rest of the flour or enough to make a moderately soft dough, and salt.
- Knead lightly.
- Place in a well-greased bowl, cover, and let rise again until double in bulk about 60-90 minutes.
- Mold into loaves, fill well-greased pans half full, cover, and let rise until light.
- Glaze with egg diluted with water and bake forty-five minutes at 400 degrees.
Notes:
- Raisin bread made with whole wheat or graham flour affords a delightful change.
