Ingredients for Raisin Bread Recipe 1

  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup milk, scalded and cooled
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 6 cups sifted flour
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable shortening or butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast and one tablespoon sugar in lukewarm liquid.
  2. Add two cups of flour, the shortening or butter, and well-creamed sugar. Beat until smooth.
  3. Cover and set aside to rise in a warm, draft-free place until light, about 60-90 minutes.
  4. When risen, add well-floured raisins, the rest of the flour or enough to make a moderately soft dough, and salt.
  5. Knead lightly.
  6. Place in a well-greased bowl, cover, and let rise again until double in bulk about 60-90 minutes.
  7. Mold into loaves, fill well-greased pans half full, cover, and let rise until light.
  8. Glaze with egg diluted with water and bake forty-five minutes at 400 degrees.
