How to Make a Homemade Hamburger
From LoveToKnow Recipes
If you don’t know how to make a homemade hamburger, you’ve come to the right place. Making burgers yourself is a fast and easy way to enjoy a hearty meal at home.
The Basics on How to Make a Homemade Hamburger
If you’ve never made a homemade burger before, it’s really very easy. There are four basic steps:
- Form a patty out of 1/4 pound of ground beef
- Cook the patty
- Place it on a bun
- Cover it with tasty toppings
While this is the standard equation for how to make a homemade hamburger, you have a lot of wiggle room to explore different variations of this American favorite. Why not shake it up a bit?
The Bread
Perhaps the most distinctive part of a hamburger is the bun. This is what sets it apart from other dishes – the two bits of rounded bread that create a wrapper around the meaty goodness. While a hamburger could be technically considered a sandwich, most Americans would do a double take if you ordered it that way. A hamburger is definitely its own institution.
When it comes to hamburger buns, you’ve got a lot of choices. You can use the standard buns available in stores, which are essentially a soft, white roll cut in half horizontally and sprinkled in sesame seeds. Some people toast their buns for a crisp, crunchy texture. But why stick to the norm when the world is full of interesting breads that are just begging to be turned into a burger bun? You might consider:
- Kaiser rolls
- Ciabatta rolls
- French rolls
- Sweet Hawaiian buns
- Sourdough rolls
- Lettuce, for those cutting carbs or allergic to wheat/gluten
- You might even consider making your own hamburger buns from scratch
- There are even recipes for gluten free hamburger buns. Don’t forget the sesame seeds!
The Beef
Regular ground beef is usually a mish-mosh of tougher, less desirable cuts, but there are other kinds available besides your standard “ground beef.” Your local butcher can provide you with a series of ground options, such as:
- Ground round
- Ground sirloin
- Ground chuck
You can also easily make your own ground meat at home from your favorite cut. Does the thought of a London broil burger make you drool? Then go for it! Simply add your favorite cut of beef to your food processor and pulse it five or six times, depending on how fine you want it ground. The more you pulse, the finer it will be and if you only pulse it a few times, you’ll have a chunkier texture. Be careful not to grind it too much, otherwise you’ll end up with a pate-like substance.
Also, feel free to add other things to your meat before you grind it, like sauces, herbs, fruit, or your other favorite toppings. For more information on adding toppings to your meat before cooking, check out these homemade hamburger recipes.
Other Meats
While beef is the number one red meat consumed in the United States, there are a whole slew of meats available to consumers. They all taste a little different and some have very different textures due to the varying fat content of animals. Some common burger-able meats you might want to try are:
- Lamb
- Buffalo
- Elk
- Deer/venison
- Goat
- Pork
- Turkey
All of these meats will make great burgers and they’ll spruce up what might be an otherwise indifferent hamburger. If you’re interested in finding out more, a good place to explore is your local butcher shop. They may have several varieties of meat available and they’ll be able to tell you the best way to cook it, too!
Ways of Cooking Your Meat
When it comes to cooking your burger, you have options here, too. Every way of cooking a burger will yield a slightly different result in both taste and texture. A fried burger will be greasier and flatter while a grilled burger will have a more char-broiled taste. Baked burgers will be moister as they don’t lose as much moisture. Experiment and see which you prefer.
Toppings Galore
When it comes to toppings, you can use anything to dress up your burger! Here are some popular options that are sure to make your mouth water:
- Cheese (American, Swiss, pepperjack, etc)
- Barbecue sauce
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Pineapple
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Ranch dressing
- Bleu cheese
