Club Sandwich

From LoveToKnow Recipes

A delightful sandwich for the truly hungry, the club sandwich is a double-decker nosh for big fressers.

Join The Club

The history of the sandwich is shaded in mystery and the history of the club sandwich is just as mysterious. While legend has it that the Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich, there are instances of “meat and bread” mentioned in several plays written before the Earl is credited with the creation of the meal. But everybody loves a good story and, if you have to be remembered for something, a nosh is as good as anything.

As far as the creation of the club sandwich goes, it is generally considered that the club sandwich was first put together in a gambling house in Saratoga Springs, New York, called the Saratoga Club House in 1894. I find it hard to believe that no one else put together a double-decker turkey sandwich before then. Apocryphal or not, that’s the accepted story of the club sandwich and so that’s the one I’m going with.

Club Sandwich

The club sandwich is really a celebration of different kinds of crunch. In fact, this sandwich is the one that should be called Mister Crunch because of all the crunchy tasty ingredients.

The crunch comes from the three slices of toast, crispy bacon, and fresh lettuce that makes up the base of the sandwich. To add a nice contrast to all the crunch, there are the tangy tomatoes and the smokey turkey, the tender softness of which only accentuates the crunch of the rest of the sandwich.

This recipe makes one sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 3 slices of toast, white or sourdough bread are best but you can use whatever bread you like
  • 4 lettuce leaves, romaine or green leaf work best
  • 4 slices of ripe tomato, I like heirloom tomatoes
  • 6 slices of crisp bacon
  • 6 slices of turkey, thinly sliced
  • Mayonnaise
  • 4 decorative toothpicks

Instructions

  1. Place one slice of bread on your cutting board.
  2. Spread some of the mayonnaise thinly on the toast.
  3. Trim two of the lettuce leaves to fit the slice of bread.
  4. Place three slices of turkey on the lettuce.
  5. Place three slices of bacon on the turkey.
  6. Place two slices of tomato on the bacon.
  7. Spread some of the mayonnaise thinly on both side of the next slice of toast.
  8. Place this piece of toast on the tomato.
  9. Repeat the order from the bottom layer.
  10. Only spread mayonnaise on one side of the top piece of toast and place that slice of toast mayonnaise side down on the sandwich.
  11. Cut the sandwich into quarters, cutting from corner to corner so you end up with four little triangles.
  12. Place a toothpick in the center of each quarter.
