From LoveToKnow Recipes
Trout are a fresh-water fish that are popular with sport fishermen. Salmon is actually a type of trout. Some types of trout can live in both fresh and salt water, and spend part of their lives in the ocean.
Trout as Food
As a source of food, trout can't be beat. Dieticians recommend that you eat at least two fish meals a week to get sufficient Omega-3s in your diet, and trout is an excellent source of this vital nutrient.
Omega Who?
Omega-3 fatty acid is an essential nutrient that has been shown can protect against a variety of heart-related diseases. Your body can't create Omega-3s - you have to get it in the foods you eat. Adding fish high in Omega-3s can offer protection from arterial plaque and the formation of blood-clots.
Omega-3s are now being studied for their effects on alzheimer's, depression and cancer.
Fisherman's Treat
When fishing for trout, check with your local authorities to make sure that fish in the waters you are fishing are safe to eat. Although great strides have been made in cleaning up polluted waters, there are still some areas where it is not safe to eat the local fish.
Farm-raised trout are always available, and smoked trout is as delicious a delicacy as smoked salmon.
Fresh-caught trout can be pan-fried, baked, sauted or stuffed and roasted over a fire. If your catch is plentiful, you can arrange to have your excess smoked for eating later. Smoked trout makes an excellent gift (hint, hint).
