If you are looking for a cross between a biscuit and a sweet treat, scones may be right up your alley. Scones are typically either a quick bread that is griddle or baked, and often served with honey. They are usually eaten for breakfast or at tea, but as with most breads, is a delicious treat almost any time of the day.
Variations
The typical scone recipe is anything but typical. It can be made with flour, oats, or even potatoes, and can vary in shape from circular, like a biscuit, to triangular. Some recipes are sweeter than others, and many include the addition of fruit or berries. For a slightly sweeter treat, consider powdering your creations with powdered sugar.
Scones History
Historically, the scone is attributed to the Scottish. Its name comes from the Stone of Destiny, which is called a “scone” by the Scots. The Stone of Destiny is where Scottish kings were crowned. The traditional triangle shape may have originally been designed to resemble the crown.
Work Time Treat
While this bread is common in Europe, most Americans have yet to try their first scones. Treat your work mates to their first taste. While they can be served warm, it is not uncommon to serve them cold. Don’t forget to take along a jar of honey, jam, or jelly for a special delight.
