Pie Recipes
Can anything really taste better than a hot pie, right out of the oven? Fruit, custard, savory, or sweet, pie recipes truly are an American food. There are so many recipes that it's hard to keep count, but they all rely on a light, flaky crust for their foundation and flavor. If you're afraid to make your own crust, don't worry! It's really not as hard as you might think and it will make your pie recipe completely homemade.Practice making crust until you get it just perfect. Then, fill it with your favorite fruits or make a pudding and use it as a filling. You can put just about anything in a pie shell and bake it. Or, you can bake the pie shell itself and fill it with cooked ingredients like custard or pudding. If you'd like to add additional flavor to your crust, try adding a few toasted, chopped nuts, or a bit of spice like cinnamon or allspice to the mixture when you add the dry ingredients.
Some Handy Baking Tips
- Make sure your butter or shortening is chilled before you start to make your dough. This makes the dough flakier and easier to work with, too.
- Chill the dough after you mix the ingredients, too - it will be much easier to roll out.
- Don't knead or work the dough any more than necessary. This will make it tough.
- You can make your crust ahead of time for your pie recipe. It will store three days in the refrigerator and three months in the freezer.
