The Scent of Onion Recipes
They say when showing your house to potential buyers, you should have recently baked bread - the baking bread smell makes a house seem 'homey'. But nothing smells quite like home-cooking as the smell of cooking onions.
Onions are eaten both cooked and raw. A raw slice on a hamburger makes a delicious if odiferous treat, but isn't considered a good choice on a date. If one person on a date has onions, both should have them, with the theory that if your breath smells like onions, you can't smell it, but your date sure will!
Onions and Garlic for your Heart
Both onions and garlic are known to lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure, both of which lead to healthier hearts and cardiovascular systems. Societies that eat large amounts of these flavorings have traditionally had lower incidents of heart disease, and science is now coming to understand why.Read more about the health benefits of onions.
Cooking Considerations
Yes, slicing onions makes you shed tears, because it releases a gas that interacts with moisture in the air to produce a very weak solution of sulfuric acid. This stings, and causes your eyes to tear up to help flush out the source of the stinging sensation.
The best solution to stinging eyes is to cut, chop or dice them entirely under water.
Once you've chopped them, however, your hands are covered with their juice, and the smell will linger even if you wash with soap. The best way to remove onion odor on your skin is to chop some celery. The celery juice will neutralize the scent. I have no idea why this works, but it does work - try it.
