Omelets make the perfect quick protein-filled meal. While traditionally eaten for breakfast or brunch, you can also vary ingredients to make them heartier for lunch or dinner. Best of all, making an omelet involves simple techniques and infinite variations.
Different Ways to Make Omelets
There are several different ways to make omelets.
- In France, cooks give the pan a quick flip to roll the eggs around the ingredients.
- You can also whisk your eggs and then fold in omelet ingredients before adding it to the pan.
- Frittatas, which are essentially omelets baked in the oven, require cooks to layer fillings and cheese atop partially cooked eggs and then broil them to finish cooking.
Whichever method you select, you will be able to make an almost infinite variety of egg dishes.
Omelet Making Tips
Although omelets are fairly simple, they provide many opportunities to create something that is really delicious and extraordinary.
- For the best flavors, start with fresh eggs and whisk in your favorite herbs and spices to the mixture.
- Adding water or dairy products and whisking them with the eggs can make the omelet fluffier and lighter.
- Choose topping that work well with eggs, such as cheese, zucchini, mushrooms, or breakfast sausage.
- If adding vegetables or meats to your omelet, sauté them before adding them to the top of the eggs.
- To cook eggs evenly, use a spatula to gently loosen cooked eggs from the edges and tilt the pan to redistribute the uncooked eggs along the sides.
- Season after cooking, not before, particularly if you are using salty fillings like bacon or parmesan cheese. Just a touch of salt will enhance flavors.
Fillings
You can use almost any filling. Try some of these classic variations on omelets:
- Ham, green peppers and cheddar cheese
- Crab and gruyere cheese
- Sausage, mushrooms and Swiss cheese
- Bacon and sharp cheddar cheese
Feel free to improvise with whatever you have available. For example, use leftover cooked vegetables, numerous kinds of cheese, and meat or smoked fish.
Use Your Imagination
The great thing about omelets is they are a creative endeavor. You can take a page from your favorite cuisine or mix brand new flavor combinations. With a little creativity, the omelet may just become your favorite food.
