Mousse Recipes
From LoveToKnow Recipes
Mousse recipes produce creamy, decadent desserts with rich, thick texture and robust flavor. Chocolate mousse is by far the most popular, though it may be garnished in a number of ways or enhanced with fruit or mint extracts for more exotic tastes. White chocolate and fruit mousses are also popular.
These desserts originated in France as a blend of soufflés and ice creams, and first became popular in the United States in the 1960s. They can be served hot or cold, though cold mousse recipes are more common for desserts and some sweet varieties are even frozen. Depending on the recipe and preparation techniques, a mousse may be light and fluffy or thick and dense, but both textures have a tendency to melt in the mouth.
Tricky Work for a Mousse Recipe
Preparation can be tricky. It is highly suggested that the mousse recipe directions be followed precisely, and try not to skimp on what may seem to be long beating times – the extensive whipping is necessary for the proper consistency. Feel free to substitute extracts or flavorings: while fruit extracts are the most common, coffee, liqueur, or mint flavorings add unique tastes to a rich confection. As a dessert, mousse’s most prominent characteristic is its presentation: it is such a decadent treat, it should be presented in all its glory with appropriate garnishes and embellishments to highlight its regal taste. Consider presenting your mousse:
- Spooned into tart shells or chocolate dessert cups
- Layered in martini, wine, or champagne glasses
- Garnished with nuts, shaved chocolate, berries, or light cookies
- Sprinkled with espresso powder, cocoa powder, crushed cookies, or powdered sugar
- Accented with mint leaves or solid chocolate swirls
- Served with a rich fruit puree or caramel sauce
