Cereal Recipes
From LoveToKnow Recipes
Most Americans think of corn flakes or rice crispies when they hear the word cereal, but those are actually cereal products, meaning they are made from cereal, which refers to the grain.
So, What is Cereal?
Cereal is the grain from specific types of grasses whose seeds are edible to humans. Wheat, rice, barley, rye... all cereal grasses and all used as a staple in diets worldwide.
In the context of this recipe section, 'cereal' means dishes made with the unground grain, rather than flour of the grain.
Breakfast Dish
Cereal is a common breakfast food throughout the world. Creamed wheat, oatmeal, hominy, creamed rice - quick, nutritious hot breakfast before a hard day's work. But don't overlook it as an interesting addition to your dinner. Try barley in place of potatoes, or wild rice instead of noodles. The less processed the foods on your plate, the more nutrients available for your body.
Eating Wheat?
Most of us are familiar with wheat only after it has been ground into flour and baked into bread. But you can also get wheat in a less-processed form, such as wheat grass and wheatberries. Wheat grass is young, green, unripened wheat that has not been harvested for the seed. It can be chewed for health or juiced as a restorative.
Wheatberry is just the grain of the wheat, fully ripened. You can boil wheatberries just like barley or rice, although the cooking time is much longer. Wheatberries have a slightly nutty flavor and are somewhat chewy. They make a great addition to a salad or can be served as a sidedish with dinner. .
