Baked goods recipes allow many of us to remember pieces of our children. Nothing says home to the human nose quite like the smell of baking bread.
This is so common, even among people who grew up in families that never baked, that realtors suggest you bake bread or another baked goods recipe shortly before your home's open house - the scent conditions potential buyers to consider your house as a home for themselves.
Pies, Breads, Rolls
Baked goods recipes are characterized by their crust or crispy golden exterior. Make sure your oven actually heats to the temperature on the control for best baking results. Many ovens are off by a number of degrees, which can interfere with your ability to brown a loaf of bread.
Baked items such as bread will stay fresh much longer in the refrigerator than in a breadbox, but will dry out over time, no matter how tightly sealed the wrapping. Freezing bread works, but you will have to allow for defrosting time before use.
In humid climates, you will need to protect your baked goods from the moisture in the air - rather than going stiff when stale, they will become mushy and lose their crispness. Keep cookies in ziplock bags until needed.
Don't Nuke That Bread!
Premade sandwiches that are designed to be microwaved are specially formulated not to be ruined by the microwave oven. Regular breads and pastries do not do well being reheated in a microwave - they become soggy and/or stiff and chewy. If you want to reheat a pastry or bread item, an oven on warm will do less damage, but watch it carefully - it can quickly dry out.
