Caring For Your Gas Stove

Choosing a Gas Stove
- When buying a gas stove, looks should be a minor consideration.
- Blue planished steel is durable and easy to keep clean and it does not rust or discolor.
- Other features to look for include steel wire over the racks that will not break or absorb heat; oven doors that are spring poised so they do not open or shut with a jar; and interlocking parts that can be easily removed for cleaning.
- The best burners are of one piece that are independently supported so they can be readily removed for cleaning.
- Covers should be made with reducing rings to accommodate openings of different sizes.
- Many ovens come with a safety lighter to ensure against explosions.

Using Your Gas Stove
- Never light a burner until you are ready to use it since it gives off the maximum amount of heat when first lit.
- Turn off a burner as soon as you have finished cooking.
- When using the oven or broiler, light both burners a few moments before you are ready to bake or broil.
- Turn off the oven burners a few moments before the cooking is finished, as the heat is retained in the oven several minutes after the burners are turned off.
- Never use a large burner when a small one will do the work.

Caring For Your Gas Stove
- Keep your stove clean by washing the top and side pan after use.
- If the burners clog, clean them with a wire while the stove top is off.
- Once or twice a week, brush out your oven and grease iron linings and sides.
- Wipe any nickel daily with a soft cloth, and, if tarnished, clean as you would silver.
- Never light the pilot without first opening the oven doors.
