Ingredients for Butterless-milkless-eggless Cake

  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups sultana raisins
  • 2 cups seeded raisins
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons powdered cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon powdered cloves
  • ½ teaspoon powdered mace
  • ½ teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1½ cups chopped nut meats
  • 3 tablespoons warm water

Instructions

  1. Put vegetable shortening into saucepan, add sugar, water, raisins, salt, and spices, and boil three minutes.
  2. Cool, and when cold add flour, baking powder, soda dissolved in warm water and nut meats.
  3. Mix and turn into vegetable shorteninged and floured cake tin and bake in slow oven one and a half hours.
  4. Sufficient for one medium-sized cake.
