Ingredients for Boston Brown Bread Recipe 4
- 1 cup rye meal
- 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup graham flour
- ¾ tablespoon baking soda
- 1/3 teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup molasses
- 1¾ cups sweet milk

Instructions
- Mix and sift ingredients.
- Dissolve soda with one tablespoon hot water, add to molasses, then add milk and mix with dry ingredients.
- Turn into greased mold two-thirds full, grease cover, and steam steadily three and a half hours.
- A 6-pound vegetable shortening pail can be used for a mold.
- Sufficient for one loaf.
