Black Forest Cake Recipe

Ingredients for Black Forest Cake Recipe
- 1 package chocolate cake mix
- 40 ounces pitted cherries, undrained
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For frosting:
- 3 cups cold whipping cream
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
(Note: extra ingredients will be needed according to cake mix directions)
Instructions
- Make cake according to package directions and bake in two 9-inch pans, greased and floured.
- Allow cake layers to cool. Remove from pans and set aside.
- Pour 1/2 cup cherry juice into a large saucepan and drain remaining juice from cherries.
- Add cherries, cornstarch, ans sugar to saucepan. Stir over low heat until thick.
- Slowly stir in vanilla.
- Using a long knife, carefully split each cake layer in half horizontally, giving you four layers. Break up one layer with a fork, turning it into crumbs.
- Make frosting by mixing whipping cream and powdered sugar in a chilled bowl. Beat on high until stiff peaks form.
- Spread 1 cup of frosting on top of first cake layer, followed by 3/4 cup cherry topping.
- Add second layer of cake and repeat frosting and cherry. Top with the third cake layer.
- Use rest of frosting to cover sides of cake and one-inch around the outside of the top layer.
- Sprinkle reserved crumbs around the sides and top of the cake. Pour rest of cherry mixture on the top center of the cake and spoon to the edge of the frosting.
