Ingredients for American Soup Recipe

  • 1 pound of mutton
  • 1/2 pound of split peas, soaked in cold water overnight
  • 5 pints of water
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1/2 turnip
  • 1/2 carrot
  • 1 stalk of celery, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3-4 tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper
  • Nutmeg or mace to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut mutton into small pieces. Put mutton pieces into a saucepan with split peas.
  2. Add water, bring to a boil, and add chopped onion, turnip, carrot, celery, and sugar.
  3. Simmer two or three hours.
  4. Cut the tomatoes into small pieces, add them to the soup, and boil thirty minutes longer.
  5. Strain through a fine sieve, season with salt, pepper, and a very little nutmeg or mace.
  6. Boil up and serve with croutons or triangles of crisp toast.
