Alternative Thanksgiving Ideas

by Stephanie Stiavetti on November 02, 2009

Thanksgiving is coming up, which means people are thinking of such traditional dishes as turkey, stuffing, cranberries and green bean casserole. There’s a reason these things are standard T-day fare - they’re GOOD! Everyone loves them, so they’ve stuck around.

But what about new foods? People’s diets are changing in this day and age, and there are new factors to consider. Dietary requirements. Food allergies. Environmental impact. Economic reality. Responsible omnivorism. With so many seemingly new priorities, how is Thanksgiving changing?

Take, for example, vegetarians. Clearly there will be no turkey at a vegetarian Thanksgiving (killing the term Turkey Day), so there will be new traditions formed here. Tofurkey or other alternatives have become staples at these dinner tables. And what about those who are gluten free? There go traditional stuffing and a host of other dishes, again forcing folks to forge new holiday pathways.

What are your alternative Thanksgiving traditions?
